Step-by-Step Guide to Using Canva Moodboard Templates

One fall morning at LSU, I sat in my Introduction to Interior Design class learning the basics of color theory. My professor explained:

“In the visual arts, color theory is a body of practical guidance to color mixing and the visual effects of a specific color combination.”

I was hooked. From that moment, I dove into color palettes, color stories, and every aspect of color I could find. Fast forward to today, and helping clients choose a cohesive brand color palette is one of my favorite parts of my work.

And it all starts with a moodboard.

What Is a Moodboard?

A moodboard (sometimes called an inspiration board) is a visual collage that sets the tone for any creative project. For branding and websites, your moodboard defines the exact color palette, fonts, textures, and overall style you’ll use across:

  • Logos, submarks, and secondary logos
  • Website colors and layouts
  • Email templates and newsletters
  • Social media graphics

Basically, a moodboard is your project’s north star—it keeps your branding consistent and makes the design process so much easier.

Why Moodboards Are Game-Changers

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with your branding, creating a moodboard can help you:

  • Visualize your brand before committing to designs
  • Find your unique color palette and style
  • Keep your branding consistent across all platforms

And moodboards aren’t just for brands! You can use them for:

  • Digital courses needing their own color scheme
  • Home décor or room makeovers
  • Setting the tone of a Branding Photoshoot
  • Inspirational collages to hang in your office

The possibilities are endless, and having a starting point makes everything more fun.

How to Create a Moodboard

Digital moodboards have come a long way from attaching printouts to a board. Tools like Canva (and Photoshop, for advanced users) allow you to mix images and colors into one cohesive, shareable board.

Here’s a simple approach to get started:

  1. Set the Direction
Decide the purpose of your moodboard. Is it for branding, a website, or another creative project? Pick a keyword, theme, or vibe to guide your choices.
  2. Collect Inspiration
Gather images, textures, and graphics that reflect your vision. Pinterest, Behance, or even your own photo library are great places to start.
  3. Add Colors & Images
Include your current brand colors or experiment with new ones. Add images to see how your visuals fit with your style.
  4. Organize & Iterate
Arrange your elements to create a visually balanced board. Step back, refine, and swap anything that doesn’t feel right.
  5. Share & Get Feedback
If you’re working with a team or client, share your moodboard and take notes. Feedback ensures your vision aligns with the goals of the project.
