Finding the right website template doesn't have to mean scrolling through hundreds of options. Here's how to choose a website template that feels like your brand, connects with your ideal clients, and gives you the right foundation for a website you’ll actually love.

There are a lot of beautiful website templates out there.

And honestly? That's part of the problem.

When you're shopping for a website template, it can be really easy to fall in love with the pretty homepage, the gorgeous photography, or the way someone else's brand looks in the demo.

But here's what I want you to remember:

The best website template isn't necessarily the prettiest one. It's the one that makes you think, “I can see my business here.”

I've designed hundreds of websites over the years, and I've learned that choosing the right starting point can make all the difference between a website that feels effortless to customize and one that you're constantly fighting against.

So if you're considering a website template for your next website, here's what I would look at before you click “buy.”

1. Start with your brand, not the template

This is probably the biggest mistake I see.

You find a template with a gorgeous color palette and beautiful images, and suddenly you're convinced that your brand needs to look exactly like that.

But before you start browsing templates, think about how you want your brand to feel.

Is it:

  • Warm and inviting?
  • Modern and minimal?
  • Romantic and feminine?
  • Bold and expressive?
  • Editorial and sophisticated?
  • Relaxed and approachable?

Your website should feel like an extension of your brand, not like you borrowed someone else's.

The template is the foundation. Your brand is what makes it yours.

2. Pay attention to the overall feeling

Don't get too caught up in individual details.

Maybe you love the font on a particular template. Or the button style. Or one gorgeous image.

Look at the design as a whole and ask yourself:

What does this website make me feel?

Because that's what your potential clients are going to feel, too.

If you're a relaxed family photographer, a highly editorial and dramatic template might not be the right starting point, even if you absolutely love the design.

And if you're a luxury service provider, a playful template with bright colors and hand-drawn elements probably isn't going to communicate the perception you're trying to create.

Choose the template whose overall personality already feels aligned with your business.

3. Make sure the structure works for your business

This is the part people often overlook because it's much less exciting than looking at fonts and photos.

But it's incredibly important.

Before purchasing a template, look at the pages and ask:

Does this website structure make sense for my business?

Think about what you actually need.

Maybe that's:

  • Home
  • About
  • Services
  • Portfolio
  • Blog
  • Contact

Or maybe you need individual service pages, a sales page, a shop, a resources page, or something completely different.

A beautiful template isn't going to save you time if you have to completely rethink the structure of every page.

The closer the template is to the way your business actually works, the easier your customization will be.

4. Look beyond the demo content

This is a big one.

When you're looking at a website template, try to mentally remove the demo brand.

Ignore the photos.

Ignore the business name.

Ignore the specific copy.

Now look at the design underneath it all.

Can you picture your own photos there?

Can you imagine your services fitting naturally into those sections?

Can you see your brand colors working with the design?

Can you imagine your own words replacing the demo copy?

If the answer is yes, you're probably looking at a strong contender.

If you're thinking, “Well, I love it, but I'd have to change almost everything…”

That's your sign to keep looking.

5. Pay attention to how customizable it is

Not every website template gives you the same amount of flexibility.

This is one of the reasons I love designing with Showit. You're not locked into a rigid template where you can only change a few colors and images.

With a well-designed Showit template, you can customize things like your:

  • Fonts
  • Colors
  • Images
  • Copy
  • Buttons
  • Page sections
  • Navigation
  • Layout details
  • Mobile design

But there's an important distinction here:

Customizable doesn't mean you should have to redesign the entire thing.

The goal of a template is to give you a strategic starting point so you aren't staring at a completely blank canvas.

6. Think about your ideal client

Your website isn't only about what you like.

It's also about what your ideal client needs to see.

Imagine that your dream client lands on your homepage.

What do you want them to think?

“She understands me.”

“This feels professional.”

“This is exactly the kind of experience I'm looking for.”

“I love her work.”

“I want to work with her.”

Your website is often the first impression someone has of your business, so the design should help attract the right people.

That means you don't necessarily need to choose the template you personally think is the most beautiful.

Choose the one that helps communicate the right message to the people you want to hire you.

7. Don't try to make a template something it isn't

This is where I see people get themselves into trouble.

Let's say you fall in love with a very minimal, neutral, editorial template.

But your actual brand is colorful, playful, energetic, and full of personality.

You can technically change the colors, fonts, images, and layouts.

But at some point, you have to ask yourself:

Why am I spending all this time trying to turn this template into something completely different?

A good template should feel like a natural fit.

You shouldn't have to fight it.

If you're constantly thinking, “I wish this section was completely different,” that's probably not the right template for you.

8. Look for the template that gives you momentum

This is ultimately what I think a great website template should do.

It should make you feel excited to build your website.

Instead of:

“Ugh. I have to figure out my homepage.”

You should be thinking:

“Okay, I can see how my business is going to come together here.”

The blank canvas is intimidating.

A strategic template gives you somewhere to start.

And when you choose one that's already aligned with your brand, your business, and your ideal client, customization becomes so much easier.

So, how do you know you've found the right one?

Here's my favorite test:

Imagine your own brand inside the template.

Not the demo brand.

Not the beautiful stock photos.

Not the carefully written placeholder copy.

Yours.

Your photos.

Your colors.

Your words.

Your services.

Your personality.

If you can picture all of that coming together and think,

“Oh. This feels like me.”

You've probably found it.

And that's exactly what I want my Showit templates to do.

They're designed to give you a beautiful, strategic foundation without making you start from scratch. You get the structure, the design, and the flexibility to make it completely your own.

Ready to find your starting point?

Your next website doesn't have to start with a blank screen.

It just needs to start with the right foundation.

A little designer note

If you've been staring at website templates for hours and somehow feel more confused than when you started, you're not alone.

You don't need to find the perfect template.

You need to find the one that's close enough to your brand that customizing it feels exciting instead of exhausting.

That's the sweet spot.

And once you find it?

That's when the fun begins. ✨
